Property Description

Known for the many fine homes he built throughout Crestwood, this one was undoubtedly the finest creation of Paul Stone – the one he built for himself in 1938. It is a very personal interpretation of the Colonial Revival style with significant elements borrowed from the Neo-classical style. The colossal Doric columns creating the portico, the fine Palladian window in the living room and numerous interior details that evoke antiquity illustrate this blend of styles. This free hand and open interpretation of the classical architectural vocabulary was one of the hallmarks of the firm of Stone, Lloyd and Caldwell. This residence possesses all of the characteristics for which this builder was known including: the first floor library, random-width oak floors and distinctive stuccowork on the lower level. Most of the homes that Mr. Stone’s firm built during its halcyon days had finished basements that were designed for casual entertaining. Today, this lower level is essentially a separate apartment that opens onto the garden. Typical details include knotty pine wainscoting, fireplaces, and plenty of natural light. Unusual for a house from this period is an attached two-car garage, which was an indication of the level of affluence of Mr. Stone’s clientele. The interior comprises: six bedrooms, dressing room, four full bathrooms, powder room, laundry room, a spectacularly renovated and luxurious eat-in kitchen, living room, separate dining room, solarium, and in-law suite. The house enjoys a bucolic setting on more than one-half acre near the Rock Creek Parkway.
